TV essay(Alex)

The professor talks about appearances on television by university professors. She mainly explains the negative aspects of television lectures, which provides an opposing view to information stated in the reading.
First, the professor mentions that when the university professors do their job on TV, their reputation among their colleagues can suffer. Their colleagues might think that these kinds of professors are not serious about their fields of study. However, according to the reading, the professor who teaches their theory on TV will be able to obtain an enhanced reputation due to the large number of people who watch TV.
Second, the speaker states that participating on TV programs takes time away from a professor’s university duties. For example, professors have to figure it out how to give his opinions in an entertaining manner to the audients on TV instead of spending time focusing on their students. Therefore, the universities to which the professors belong have disadvantages. On the other hand, according to the reading, the university benefits from professors doing TV spots because they improve the university’s reputation.
Third, the lecturer points out that people who watch TV at dinnertime don’t want to watch serious programs at all. In addition, these programs are similar to a reporter’s summary. However, according to the reading, the public benefits from what professors say on TV.
The three main points of the listening lecture are that television appearances will damage a professor’s reputation, the university reputation and will not assist the public in any real manner. These main points are totally opposite those presented in the reading.
