TV by Joe

The professor discuss the question about benefits regarding academic experts appearing on television. She hold the opposite attitude expressed in the reading.
First, the professor mentions that there is no benefit to the professors who were appearing on television, because people would think that they were not serious scholars. people may think these experts entertain rather than educate. Therefore, they will not have the chance to be invited to conferences to discuss academic work. Then, they would not get money to continue their research. On the other hand, the reading material shows that professor gains a lot from participating in television. The writer think that experts can get reputations as authorities in academic fields, because they have large audience.
Second, the speaker states that appearing on television takes time away from the campus work and research activities. This would result in many problems for university when professors are in the television studio. For instance, they would have to prepare to attend the TV show, and they would not have time to do their research, or be with students. However, according to the reading, there are many benefits for university. Professors appear on television is positive publicity: it can improve the university’s reputation. As a result, university can get more donations and more students.
Third, the professor mentions that experts appearing on television is no benefit to the public. People are interested in background history or a brief introduction: they don’t wont to see a serious topic after dinner. By contrast, the reading makes it clear that the public gains from experts appearing on TV. The writer thinks that gives more opportunities for the public to learn from experts, it can expose them to topic they may not have considered otherwise.
